Reserve Deputies / Explorers

Sgt. Robert Dwyer is the Supervisor of the Reserve Deputy Program.
A Reserve Deputy is an unpaid volunteer who assists our deputies with their duties.
Reserve Deputies are vital to the mission of the Sheriff’s Office and to the safety of our deputy sheriffs. We have 36 certified Reserve Deputies.
A Reserve Deputy candidate:

  • must pass the SC Reserve Officer Training Program
  • must complete 162 hours of training to become certified
  • required to serve 60 hours each quarter
  • must also attend monthly training
  • Reserve Deputies who log 240 hours with a certified deputy may work alone.

Join Our Team

Law Enforcement Explorers
Law Enforcement Explorers are charted by the Boy Scouts of America. Youths age 14 to 21 are eligible to become a Law Enforcement Explorer.

Law Enforcement Explorers are trained in all areas of law enforcement duties to include traffic control, crime scene investigation, patrol duties, building searches and report writing.

Cadets recently participated in the SCALES (South Carolina Association of Law Enforcement Explorers) Competition for Law Enforcement Cadet programs in South Carolina. They have won several awards. The Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office hosted the winter competition.
